Who are we?

Carbon Neutrality logo

Carbon Neutrality is a Carboneutre Quebec company founded in 2019 specializing in helping individuals and businesses achieve their goal of reducing their carbon footprint.

The WHO points out that air pollution now claims more lives globally than AIDS, tuberculosis, diabetes, and road accidents together.

Our mission

At Carbon Neutrality, our main mission is to support individuals and businesses in making their activities carbon neutral or at least less polluting.

Our vision

There is a difference between what Carbon Neutrality offers and what its competitors offer. We not only have a partnership with Carbone Boréal, who will plant the required numbers of trees in to capture the equivalent of what your activities produce in terms of CO2, but we will also ensure in an ethical and responsible manner that your investments are also used to carry out other eco-responsible projects contributing to the restoration of our forests and our bodies of water.

For businesses

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) contribute to 70% of total pollution. It is clear that SMEs have a significant impact on the environment, but also on society and the economy. At this time when the consequences of global warming are increasingly felt, we believe it is the moral responsibility of a company to offset the carbon it emits by becoming carbon neutral.

Our team will assess your company’s CO2 production and offer you a monthly or annual rate that will be used to plant the number of trees necessary for your compensation with our partner, Carbone Boréal.

All the companies we work with receive our official certification which indicates that they are now carbon neutral companies.

Your customers are increasingly looking for eco-responsible companies.

Certification level

Level 1 Commitment (Bronze): The organization has made an inventory of what is likely to produce greenhouse gases, has submitted this information to Carbon Neutrality and is aware of its carbon footprint. It offsets all emissions from the use of electronic devices, the transport of goods or people and the use of fossil fuels.

Level 2 Improvement (Silver): The organization has made an inventory of what is likely to produce greenhouse gases, has submitted this information to Carbon Neutrality and is aware of its carbon footprint. It offsets all the emissions due to the use of electronic devices, the transport of goods or people, the use of fossil fuels in addition to offsetting 25% to 90% of what it produces and / or puts on the market.

Level 3 Certified (Gold): The organization has made an inventory of what is likely to produce greenhouse gases, has submitted this information to Carbon Neutrality and is aware of its carbon footprint. It offsets all the emissions due to the use of electronic devices, the transport of goods or people, the use of fossil fuels in addition to offsetting all of what it produces and / or puts on the market.

For individuals

One person generates an average of 6 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. All this CO2 excludes pollution produced at work or at school, as this carbon dioxide is redistributed to businesses, corporations and organizations in our calculations.

There are still few people and even fewer carbon neutral families in Canada. As if for most of us the pollution problem should be solved only by companies and governments.

It is affordable to offset your family carbon dioxide emissions by being a Carbon Neutrality customer.

Every dollar you invest with us will be used to plant trees to capture CO2 but also to make our planet greener by collaborating with organizations for the preservation of our planet.

Your carbon neutral events

Do you know what makes an event completely successful today compared to 20 years ago? It is knowing that the organizers are eco-conscious.

Carbon Neutrality will be pleased to make your activities carbon neutral and to be present during the event, if necessary.

FAQ

Questions we are regularly asked

The plantations are mainly located in the boreal forest north of Lac-Saint-Jean in Quebec. Trees are planted on Quebec public lands considered by the forest inventories of the Quebec Ministry of Natural Resources and Fauna as non-forests: stripped dry (DS).

The dry strikes are mostly located in the spruce-moss domain, located approximately between the 49th and 52nd parallels. Black spruce (Picea mariana) is the dominant tree species, accounting for over 75% of the spruce-moss forest cover.

DS are created by regeneration accidents (passage of successive fires or insect epidemics), resulting in a conversion of closed stands of spruce moss to open stands, DS (percentage of recovery is less than 25 %).

Over the past 50 years, a gradual increase in the creation of DS has been observed.

The amount of CO2 offset is based on the sequestration of a black spruce in the boreal forest. The study by Gaboury et al. (2009) showed that the tree will take up 140 kg (0.14 t) of eq. CO2 after 70 years. This amount is used to determine the number of trees to plant to offset GHG emissions in order to make you carbon neutral. Carbon offsetting aims to completely remove from the atmosphere the equivalent of greenhouse gas emissions made by a given activity.

The compensation calculation is based on the sequestration claim of a study carried out at UQAC (Gaboury et al., 2009). This study made it possible to calculate the net carbon sequestration balance between an unmanaged natural SD and a managed and wooded SD with black spruce. The results demonstrated a carbon sequestration potential (C) of 77 t C ha-1, i.e. a net sequestration rate of 1.1 t C ha-1 year-1 (resulting from the absorption of 4 t CO2 eq. Ha -1 year-1), 70 years after afforestation. For a single black spruce tree, this represents a sequestration of 140 kg of eq. CO2 after 70 years. A life cycle analysis (LCA) was also performed in this study to assess the GHG emissions related to the afforestation of DS. The LCA demonstrated that, in a context of afforestation / reforestation in the boreal forest of Quebec, all operations related to afforestation (nearly 40 processes, ranging from seed and plant production, road construction and monitoring plantations) represent less than 0.5% of the net C balance after 70 years.

Yes. At Carbon Neutrality, plantations and sequestration claims are validated by an independent third party (the Bureau de normalisation du Québec (BNQ)) according to the 14064-2 and 3 standard. The trees allocated for your compensations exist and indeed sequester the CO2 expected. The compensation offered therefore includes rigorous and transparent verification.

The protocol for quantifying and monitoring net carbon sequestration conforms to the international standard ISO 14064-2 and has been validated by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The project’s plantations are then verified according to the ISO 14064-3 standard by the Bureau de normalisation du Québec (BNQ), an independent and accredited third party.

At maturity, the trees in the plantations will have captured the CO2 equivalent to your compensation. Subsequently, a balance is established between the loss of carbon through decomposition and the growth of regeneration, ensuring that the sequestered carbon is maintained. Afforestation of territories therefore makes it possible to constitute a new forest and create a new carbon sink. A black spruce in Quebec reaches maturity between 45 and 70 years depending on the quality of the site where it grows. Mature spruce can then typically live 175 to 200 years, to a maximum of 250 years. Planting in DS therefore guarantees that the carbon sequestered there will be sequestered over a long period.

Subsequently, carbon dynamics cause some of the carbon accumulated in tree biomass to be returned to the atmosphere as dead trees decompose. However, part of the carbon is also transferred to forest soils during decomposition. In addition, the pre-established regeneration that takes place in the understory, i.e. layering in black spruce, will allow new trees to grow and sequester carbon when mature dead trees give them room to do so. In fact, a mature forest is theoretically in equilibrium between carbon loss and sequestration. It has even been shown that some old forests continue to have a positive carbon sequestration balance.

Our main partner for tree planting is Carbone boréal. The price for the compensation is $ 28 per tonne of CO2 in boreal forest plantations or $ 35 for agricultural plantations with a rebate of $ 7 per tonne to farmers.

At this price, we add a fixed rate for small polluters and a variable rate for the largest emitters of CO2.
